Setting up your apps

tala.family runs several apps for daily use. All of them use your tala.family account — sign in once and you're set.

Files and documents — OpenCloud

What it does: A personal cloud drive where you can store files, share folders, and edit documents together. Think of it as a family Google Drive.

Web: space.tala.family — Works from any browser. You can upload, download, create folders, and edit office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) directly in the browser.

Desktop sync: To keep a folder on your computer in sync with your cloud drive:

  1. Download the desktop client: https://opencloud.eu/en/product/download-apps#mosaic-8565

  2. During setup, enter the server URL: https://space.tala.family

  3. Sign in with your tala.family account.

  4. Choose which folders to sync. They'll appear as a regular folder on your computer.

Mobile app:

  • iPhone/iPad: Install ownCloud from the App Store.

  • Android: Install ownCloud from the Play Store.

  • Set the server URL to https://space.tala.family and sign in.

Photos — Immich

What it does: Automatic photo and video backup with a timeline view, search, and shared albums. Similar to Google Photos, but your photos stay on the family server.

Web: photos.tala.family — Browse your photo library, create albums, and share them with family members.

Mobile app (recommended):

  1. Install Immich from the App Store or Play Store.

  2. Enter the server URL: https://photos.tala.family

  3. Sign in with your tala.family account.

  4. Enable automatic backup when the app asks. This uploads your photos in the background whenever you're on Wi-Fi.

Tips:

  • The mobile app can auto-delete photos from your phone after they've been backed up, freeing up space.

  • You can create shared albums that multiple family members can contribute to.

  • Search works on faces, objects, and locations — just type what you're looking for.

Tasks and planning — Vikunja

What it does: Shared task lists and project boards. Good for shopping lists, trip planning, administrative tasks’ tracking, but also suitable for completely personal use!

Web: planner.tala.family — Create lists, assign tasks, set due dates, and organize with kanban boards.

Mobile: Vikunja works well as a web app on phones. Open planner.tala.family in your mobile browser and add it to your home screen for quick access:

  • iPhone: Open in Safari, tap the share button, then Add to Home Screen.

  • Android: Open in Chrome, tap the menu, then Add to Home Screen.

Book library — Booklore

What it does: A digital library for ebooks, comics, and audiobooks. Browse and read books in the browser, sync reading progress with Kobo e-readers and KOReader, and share books with the family. Similar to Kindle's library, but self-hosted.

Web: library.tala.family — Browse your book collection, read EPUBs and PDFs in the browser, and manage your library.

E-reader sync:

  • Kobo: Booklore has built-in Kobo sync support. Follow the integration guide in Booklore's settings to connect your Kobo device.

  • KOReader: Use the OPDS feed to access your library. In KOReader, add an OPDS catalog with the URL from Booklore's OPDS settings page.

  • Other apps: Any OPDS-compatible reading app (Moon+ Reader, Librera, etc.) can connect to Booklore's catalog.

Sign in: Click "Sign in with tala.family" on the login page. Your account is automatically created on first login.

AI chat — LibreChat

What it does: A chat interface for talking to AI models running on the family server. Ask questions, get help with writing, brainstorm ideas, or just have a conversation.

Web: llm.tala.family — Open in any browser and start chatting. Your conversations are saved and private to your account.

Sign in: Click "Sign in with tala.family" on the login page.

Tips:

  • Conversations are stored on the family server — nothing is sent to external cloud services.

  • The AI model runs locally on our hardware, so responses may take a moment depending on the question complexity.

Search — SearXNG

What it does: A privacy-respecting metasearch engine that queries multiple search engines (Brave, DuckDuckGo, Wikipedia, and others) and combines the results — without tracking you, profiling you, or showing ads. No account required.

Web: search.tala.family — Open in any browser and search. No sign-in needed.

Tips:

  • SearXNG doesn't track your searches. There are no accounts, no cookies, no personalization.

  • Results come from privacy-respecting engines only (Brave, DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Wikipedia, and more). Google and Bing are intentionally excluded.

  • You can set it as your browser's default search engine. In most browsers, go to Settings → Search Engine → Add, and enter https://search.tala.family/search?q=%s as the search URL.

  • The dark theme is on by default. You can change it in the Preferences page.
